Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a intense meditation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the kind of problems that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
